Covenant House California
Established in 1988, Covenant House California has opened its doors to more than 145,000 homeless youth who suffer from the trauma of trying to survive on the streets. Covenant House California's mission in its Hollywood and Oakland programs is to protect and safeguard all children of the street with absolute respect and unconditional love. This is achieved through comprehensive street outreach services and residential programs, including:
Crisis Care
The Crisis Shelter provides safe housing, food, clothing, case management, counseling, health care, and other supportive services to assist homeless and at-risk youth in resolving their crisis situations. This program operates 24 hours a day throughout the year.
Street Outreach
The Outreach van and staff have been a regular presence on the streets of Los Angeles for more than 12 years. Outreach staff build trusting relationships with youth, addressing their immediate needs such as food, shelter, and referrals, and assisting them in taking the steps necessary to resolve their crisis situations. The Outreach staff responds to referrals from other social service agencies and also responds to referrals from the Covenant House NINELINE, a national, 24-hour crisis hotline available at 1-800-999-9999 or www.nineline.org.
Street youth encountered by the Street Outreach Program often are hesitant to enter a shelter program. These young people are referred to the Covenant House California Day Outreach Program where trained case managers are available to discuss various Covenant House California programs with the youth and to provide crisis intervention, referrals, and intake assistance.
Transitional Living Programs
- Rights of Passage
Rights of Passage, a transitional living program, is a 32-bed program in Hollywood and a six-bed program in Oakland. Rights of Passage emphasizes the development of life skills that eventually will enable youth to achieve and maintain an independent lifestyle in their own permanent housing.
- The Supportive Apartment Program
This 16-bed, scattered site apartment program provides less direct supervision and support than youth receive in the Rights of Passage program. It teaches greater independence by encouraging youth to use resources available in the community.
Job Training
The Employment Skills Program (ESP) in Hollywood and the Oakland Community Service Center provides comprehensive services to assist youth who have had limited opportunities to gain the educational/vocational skills and workplace values necessary for independent living. Both programs offer educational assessment and assistance, computer skills training, General Equivalency Diploma preparation, pre-employment, job development, and job retention services. An extensive Internship Program, Employer's Network, and mentors provide youth additional opportunities.
Health Care Services
The Health Services Center provides both residential and non-residential homeless youth with comprehensive emergency and primary care medical exams, psychological and psychiatric services and referrals for specialty care such as optometry and dentistry.
Alcohol and Drug Counseling
Prevention/intervention, individual counseling and therapy, as well as support groups are provided. Additionally, psychiatric and psychological services are available to youth who struggle with substance abuse issues.
